Toon Blast - Game Overview

"Toon Blast" is a free-to-play puzzle game developed by Peak Games, which is also known for creating "Toy Blast." The game offers a vibrant cartoon world featuring characters like Cooper Cat, Wally Wolf, and Bruno Bear. The gameplay centers around blasting cubes and creating powerful combos to navigate through levels filled with various challenges and obstacles.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Toon Blast leverages match-2 puzzle mechanics in which players need to tap on groups of two or more adjacent cubes of the same color to clear them from the board and achieve specific level objectives, like freeing trapped toys, clearing ducks, bursting balloons or watermelons or clearing a set number of cubes.

Each level offers a fixed number of moves, challenging players to achieve objectives efficiently and encouraging thoughtful decision-making.

Players can create special items such as Rockets (formed by matching 5-6 cubes of the same color to clear an entire row or column), Bombs (created by matching 7-8 cubes to destroy a surrounding cluster of cubes), and Disco Balls (generated by matching 9+ cubes to remove all cubes of a specific color).

They can merge two special items to unleash powerful combo effects (Rocket + Bomb clears multiple rows and columns simultaneously) and (double Disco Balls, when activated clears the entire board).

Players start with five lives. One life is lost each time a level fails, and it regenerates over time, with one life added every 30 minutes up to a maximum of five. Additional lives can be requested from team members or bought with coins.

The gameplay supports team and social interaction through joining or creating teams, requesting and donating lives within the team, and earning free coins by sending lives to teammates.

Each level awards up to three stars based on performance, encouraging replayability to achieve perfect scores and earn additional rewards.

Levels are organized into episodes, initially containing 20 levels and later expanding to 50 levels per episode after level 350. After finishing all episodes, players access the Champion League to compete globally for top rankings.

Players can enjoy the game without a constant internet connection, making it convenient for on-the-go play.

Monetization Strategy: Toon Blast

1. Beginner’s Bundle

In the Toon Blast, the "Beginner's Bundle" is introduced as the ‘First Purchase’, suggesting it's available at a special price for first-time buyers.

The bundle, priced at 100 INR offers a collection of power-ups (bombs, anvil, boxing gloves, hammers, disco balls, and rockets) and 200+ coins for uninterrupted gameplay.

This package is a one-time offer introduced at level 2 when new players run out of moves, encouraging early purchases to help them continue gameplay without interruption.

Labeling it as a "First Purchase" deal uses the psychological principle of exclusivity and urgency, suggesting that this is a special opportunity available for a limited time.

By offering a significant bundle at the start, the game encourages early player investment. This can lead to increased player retention and the likelihood of future purchases, as initial investment often leads to continued spending.

2. Beginner’s Pass

The "Beginner's Pass" is a targeted in-app purchase designed specifically for new players to enhance their early game experience.

This pack is introduced after the player crosses level 4 in the Toon Blast and offers unlimited lives for 30 minutes, 100 coins, unlimited gameplay boosters for 90 minutes, and 3 hidden chests.

The Beginner's Pass is offered once throughout the gameplay and is accessible for 6 days and 23 hours, emphasizing its exclusive availability shortly after starting the game.

Priced at 260 INR, the pricing strategy focuses on providing significant value through bundled items at a reduced cost compared to purchasing each component separately.

3. Starter Pack

The "Starter Pack" is one of the initial deals that offers 250 coins at a discounted price, focusing primarily on providing in-game currency rather than power-ups, which distinguishes it from the Beginner's Bundle.

This IAP becomes available at level 6, slightly later than the Beginner’s Bundle, and is designed to provide a secondary boost after players have advanced further into the game.

The Starter Pack is a one-time offer aimed at enhancing the gameplay experience after players have gained a bit of familiarity with the game. Its purpose is to offer new players another opportunity to invest in their progress after they’ve experienced a few more levels.

The pack is priced at 50 INR and at the same time, advertised with a "90% OFF" discount, utilizing the psychological effect of a large discount to create a sense of high value for money, encouraging users to make a purchase decision based on perceived savings.

By getting new players to make an initial small purchase, the game Toon Blast increases the likelihood of further purchases. Once players invest money, even a small amount, they are more likely to continue investing in the game.

4. Team Pack

The "Team Pack" in Toon Blast is designed to offer a bulk of resources that include coins, unlimited lives, and an assortment of power-ups such as bombs, rocket boosters, hammers, boxing gloves, anvils, dice boosters, and disco balls, at a discounted price to the individual purchaser and also to their teammates.

Each offer in this deal comes with added ‘unlimited lives’ for 10 teammates that last for varying durations (15 minutes and 30 minutes), encouraging team cooperation.

This deal becomes available at level 8 and features a countdown timer of 23 hours and 52 minutes, highlighting its limited-time nature and urging players to act quickly before it expires.

The Team Pack has two offers that are priced at 260 INR and 520 INR, each marked with 60% off and 70% off respectively. The differentiation here lies in the bulk offering and the shared benefits extending to team members, enhancing the value proposition for players who are part of active teams.

By offering benefits to the team members of the buyer, the pack leverages the psychology of reciprocity where teammates may feel inclined to return the favor. Social dynamics encourage more members to engage in similar purchases.

The dual-pack choice allows users to choose based on their spending ability while still feeling like they are getting a great deal because of the exciting discount and the array of benefits both to themselves and their teammates.

5. Toon Pass

The "Toon Pass" is an enhanced subscription-style in-app purchase that offers in-game currency and power-ups along with exclusive rewards (8 lives, a golden profile picture frame, a golden name, gifts for all teammates, and a unique Toon Pass sticker).

At level 15, players are presented with this time-limited Toon Pass offer when they try to access the locked section, mentioning its price of 1050 INR and its availability for 28 days and 2 hours.

The ‘golden profile and name enhancement’ reward serves as a status symbol within the game community, appealing to players’ desires for distinction and recognition.

By structuring rewards that unlock through gameplay, the Toon Pass taps into the psychological principle of operant conditioning, where behaviors (in this case, playing and progressing) are reinforced through rewards.

The countdown creates urgency, pushing players to make a purchase decision quickly to avoid missing out on the benefits and is exploiting the fear of missing out (FOMO).

6. Progress Pack

The Progress Pack allows players to unlock up to 2000 coins at a single price point by achieving star milestones, which are structured to be released incrementally as players collect 3, 5, 20, 50, and 100 stars. This incentivizes ongoing gameplay and encourages higher performance to unlock the full value of the pack.

Once unlocked at level 21, players can purchase the Progress Pack from the Toon Blast home window, with the offer available for 2 days and 23 hours.

The Progress Pack is priced at 100 INR and prominently advertises a "95% OFF" discount, making the purchase appear more lucrative and accessible and contrasting as well with the usual cost of accumulating coins through regular play or smaller purchases.

The structured milestones leverage the psychological effect where people's efforts increase as they approach a goal. By segmenting rewards, players are motivated to keep playing to unlock the next tier, enhancing engagement.

The large discount plays on the consumer's desire to get a good deal, creating a strong incentive to purchase now rather than later.

7. Endless Marathon

The "Endless Marathon" IAP in Toon Blast offers a combination of both free and paid rewards as part of a progression system.

This deal is offered at level 42 when players can unlock benefits like unlimited lives for a limited time (15 minutes), coins, and special boosters (Bombs, Rockets, Disco Balls). The major highlight is the progression model, where users unlock free rewards and one paid option (200 coins for $2.99) as they move through the marathon.

The IAP is a limited-time event, evidenced by the "2d 4h" timer displayed at the top. Such IAPs are often cyclically repeated, particularly around holidays, to keep the game dynamic and engaging.

The main paid portion of the deal is 200 coins for $2.99, while the rest of the rewards are free and unlocked through gameplay. Hence, the strategy allows users to feel rewarded as they progress while also giving them the option to purchase additional resources.

The psychology behind the IAP relies on a progression system that engages players with free rewards first, using the foot-in-the-door technique and nudging them toward a paid purchase.

The strategy used in this IAP utilizes a variable ratio schedule, where rewards are given after an unspecified number of actions, known to be one of the most potent schedules for maintaining consistent activity because it exploits natural human curiosity and desire for completion.

8. Halloween Pass

The Halloween Pass is a limited-time variation of the Toon Pass, introduced during the Halloween event irrespective of any gameplay level.

The IAP offers players exclusive rewards such as extra lives (8 instead of 5), unlimited boosters for 150 minutes, 675 coins, a golden profile frame, and other in-game resources, tailored to the festive season but similar to regular Toon Pass offerings.

The deal is a seasonal offering, specifically themed around Halloween. It is repeatedly popped up on the player’s screen for a limited time, indicated by the countdown of "23d 12h".

Priced at 1050 INR, the pricing strategy is set to match what is perceived as affordable yet profitable in the context of the game's usual player spending.

Gifts for teammates can motivate purchases driven by social interactions and the desire to reciprocate within a community.

This pass leverages seasonal exclusivity and FOMO, using limited-time rewards and themed visuals to drive purchases.

9. Holiday Offer

The "Black Friday" from Toon Blast is themed around the popular shopping event that offers 4000 in-game currency (coins) for a reduced price.

The deal is offered annually in conjunction with the Black Friday event, a well-known retail sales day following Thanksgiving in the United States. The timer in the image, "3d 21h", indicates that this offer is available for just four days, typical for Black Friday deals which are often limited to a few days around the event.

The IAP is priced at €21.99, down from the original price of €43.99 with a 50% discount.

By associating the offer with Black Friday, a day synonymous with significant discounts, and setting a visible countdown, the game creates a sense of scarcity and urgency, compelling players to make quick purchasing decisions.

The deal leverages the anchoring effect with the original price shown struck-through next to the discounted price, anchoring players to perceive the discounted price as a significant bargain.

10. Welcome Back Offer

The "Welcome Back Offer" entices returning players to engage with the game by offering them a discount on in-game currency and power-ups.

The deal is introduced to users who are returning to the game after 6 to 7 days of inactivity, serving as an incentive for lapsed players to re-engage with the game with a bundle of 1000 coins and a combination of power-ups (Rockets, Bombs, and Disco Balls) at a discounted price.

The pack is offered at 100 INR, marked down from a higher value, indicated by a "95% OFF".

The countdown timer of 23 hours 59 minutes adds a sense of urgency, prompting users to make a quick decision to avoid missing out on a good deal.

The original price is not shown, but the "95% OFF" creates a high perceived value, anchoring users to believe they are getting a significant bargain.

In-game currency

1. Coins

In Toon Blast, coins serve as the primary in-game currency, essential for purchasing power-ups, extra moves, and lives to keep playing.

They are essential for progressing through difficult levels and overcoming challenging puzzles.

Players can earn coins by completing levels and participating in in-game events like Sky Pirates, and Adventure Islands.

Coins can also be purchased with real money through in-game transactions available in the in-game store.

Managing coins wisely is important, as running out of them can limit a player's ability to progress smoothly through the game.

2. Lives

In Toon Blast, lives are also an in-game currency that limits the number of levels players can attempt.

Players start with a set number of lives (usually 5), and each failed level results in losing one life. Lives automatically regenerate every 30 minutes.

Additional lives can be bought with in-game coins, letting players keep playing without waiting.

There is a limit to how many lives a player can hold, often around 5. Once the limit is reached, no more lives are added until some are used.

Players can send and receive lives from friends or teammates, promoting social interaction and teamwork in the game.

Social Integration

Toon Blast incorporates social integration features to enhance player engagement and foster interaction.

Players can request and send lives to teammates by joining or creating teams, promoting cooperation and teamwork.

A "Help" button allows players to respond to life requests, and notifications are sent when someone sends them a life.

The game incentivizes players to join its social media communities on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, including bonuses such as 15 minutes of unlimited lives.

These social features tap into the psychology of reciprocity and community, fostering a sense of belonging and increasing long-term retention.

In-game Store (shop)

The in-game shop in "Toon Blast" offers a range of resources to help players overcome challenging levels and improve their gameplay experience.

Coin packs are available in amounts from 100 to 10,000 coins, priced between ₹210 and ₹10,300.

Special in-app purchases (IAPs) like the Beginner's Bundle, Starter Pack, and Halloween Pass provide combinations of coins, boosters, and extra lives for added value.

These IAP offers are updated regularly and can be accessed in the shop, ensuring players always have access to the latest deals and resources.

In-game Events (LiveOps)

1. Sky Mission

The Sky Mission event is a special, time-limited event in Toon Blast that lasts for 2 days. The objective of the event is for players to create rockets by matching 5 or 6 cubes of the same color.

Players are tasked with filling a progress bar by creating rockets. Completing this task allows players to earn various rewards, including the highly sought-after unlimited lives, which enable player to play longer without interruptions.

The event features a series of tasks, such as collecting a specific number of cubes, clearing obstacles like ice blocks or honey, and rescuing characters trapped in levels. These tasks provide clear goals for players to achieve.

The Sky Mission event aims to boost player engagement by providing exciting challenges and tangible rewards.

2. Sky Pirates

The Sky Pirates event is a collaborative in-game activity in Toon Blast where players work together as a team to earn rewards. This time-limited event lasts for 2 days.

To join the Sky Pirates event, players must be part of a team. The stars earned by team members from completing levels contribute to the team's overall progress.

During the event, every star collected from completed levels counts towards the team's progress. This encourages teamwork, as players need to complete levels efficiently to gather more stars.

As the team collects stars, they unlock various rewards based on their performance. These rewards can include boosters like rockets, bombs, disco balls, hammers, coins, and other valuable resources to help players in future levels.

The event also features a competitive aspect, where teams strive to achieve the highest total stars compared to other teams, adding excitement and motivation for players.

3. Toon Race

The Toon Race is a competitive event in Toon Blast, lasting for two days, where players race to complete levels as quickly as possible.

Players compete within the time limit to finish levels faster than other players, aiming for top positions on the leaderboard, which creates excitement and motivation.

Players earn points by finishing levels quickly, which affects their overall ranking. Higher rankings lead to better rewards, including boosters that assist in completing levels more efficiently.

Players can improve their performance by planning their moves wisely and using special items and boosters effectively to clear obstacles.

Elements like points, ranks, and rewards tap into players' competitive instincts, making gameplay more engaging and rewarding their progress with tangible benefits.

4. Disco Fever

The Disco Fever event lasts for 58 minutes, where 5 players compete against each other in real-time. The objective is to collect as many "melodies" as possible by completing levels during this time.

Players earn melodies by successfully completing game levels. The more levels a player finishes, the more melodies they collect. Speed and efficiency in finishing levels are key to collecting more melodies.

Players are ranked based on the total number of melodies they collect during the event. The higher a player ranks on the leaderboard, the better their chances of winning valuable rewards.

At the end of the event, players receive rewards based on their ranking. These rewards include boosters, coins, and other useful items that can enhance future gameplay.

5. Adventure Island

The Adventure Island event in Toon Blast challenges players to collect anchors by completing levels, with each anchor advancing their progress in the event.

As players gather more anchors, they unlock rewards like boosters, coins, and special items. Higher anchor totals lead to better rewards.

This event lasts for two days, motivating players to complete as many levels as possible within the given time to maximize rewards.

While the event is focused on individual achievement, being part of a team allows players to support each other and share strategies for faster progress.

Push Notifications

Toon Blast sends 3 to 4 event-based notifications daily, keeping users informed and engaged without overwhelming them.

The tone of Toon Blast notifications is lively, engaging, and action-oriented, using phrases like "Join the battle and crush your enemies!" and "Ready for a race?" to motivate users to participate actively with a competitive edge.

Notifications in Toon Blast are timed to align with key moments, such as when an event is starting or ending. For example, "Shield Clash is ending soon!" encourages users to engage before the event concludes, ensuring the notification is relevant to their game experience.

The notifications target specific user groups based on their participation in events, such as sending event-specific messages only to players active in the Team Tournament or Shield Clash, indicating segmentation based on user involvement.

The CTAs in these notifications are action-driven and urgent, prompting immediate participation and engagement with phrases like "Join the battle and crush your enemies!" and "Last hour to collect stars!"
