Bumble- App Overview

Bumble, developed by Bumble Inc., is a digital dating and networking application. Users view profiles of potential matches and can either 'swipe left' to decline or 'swipe right' to express interest. In heterosexual matches, initial contact can be made only by female users with matched males; in homosexual matches, either person can send the first message.

Core Functionality

Bumble uses geolocation data to recommend potential matches nearby, enhancing the chances of forming meaningful connections.

The app features a swiping interface, enabling users to indicate interest by swiping right or to decline potential matches by swiping left.

In heterosexual matches, Bumble gives women the exclusive power to initiate conversations, promoting a fair and inclusive approach to online dating.

Matches on Bumble have a 24-hour timeframe for initiating conversation. If a user fails to send a message within this period, the connection expires and disappears.

Once a connection is established, users can engage in conversations through the in-app messaging feature, facilitating communication within the platform.

The Bumble app provides three distinct modes: Bumble Date, Bumble BFF, and Bumble Bizz, each serving different purposes.

The Bumble app provides two subscription services, Bumble Boost, and Bumble Premium, offering extra features to improve the Bumble experience.

Monetization Strategy: Bumble

1. Spotlight

The Spotlight feature is a strategic IAP offered to users to enhance their profile's visibility within the app's ecosystem.

Special time-limited deals, such as a 30-minute Spotlight with an additional 30 minutes free or 16 times more visibility for a reduced price, motivate users to avail of the offer.

Bumble offers Spotlight in bundle package options (1, 5, 15, or 30). The package of 5 Spotlights offers a 32% discount, 15 Spotlights offering a 49% discount, while the ‘MOST POPULAR’ choice is the package of 30 Spotlights.

2. Beeline Premium Access Offer

The 'Beeline' is an in-app purchase offer designed for users to confirm mutual interest. Getting this offer will let users know who is interested in them without swiping on profiles. This is meant to create meaningful interactions.

This offer is presented to users at various interaction points within the application, such as after receiving a notification that someone likes them or when they have a number of users who have shown interest.

Users can subscribe on a weekly basis or choose a monthly subscription at a reduced rate. The weekly option is labeled as ‘Most Popular’, while the monthly subscription offers a savings of 41%. Besides, 6 months and the 3-month package give a 55% and 49% discount respectively.

Users can also go for a one-time payment to avail of a lifetime offer.

3. SuperSwipe

Bumble’s SuperSwipe offer lets users express a heightened level of interest in a potential match. It’s more than just swiping right on another’s profile.

It's a direct way to communicate your strong interest before another person swipes on your profile.

Users can choose how many SuperSwipes they want based on their willingness to invest in potential matches. This comes in a pack of 2, 5, 15, and 30, with the pack of 30 being the most popular buy by active users.

4. Best Bees

‘Best Bees’ is an IAP offered to users to find highly compatible matches. This feature uses Bumble’s matching algorithm to enhance user experience.

To acquaint users with this feature, Bumble offers a complimentary trial period. During this trial, users can swipe right to show interest in one 'Best Bee' profile per week without any cost.

Those seeking engagement with unlimited 'Best Bees' profiles can get a Bumble premium subscription.

The subscription comes for 1 week. This is the most popular user preference. Besides, users can opt for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or a lifetime package based on their matchmaking goals.

5. Rematch Connection

The Rematch feature in the form of IAP  appears on the user’s screen when they show interest in reconnecting with an expired match.

It specifically targets matches that have expired due to a user not sending the first message within 24 hours. However, this offer is not accessible to male users.

The dating platform presents multiple subscription periods for this offer: a weekly plan, a monthly plan, a three-month subscription, and a six-month option, which offers the best value per week.

6. Bumble Extend Match

Bumble's Extend Match feature comes as an IAP, allowing users to add an additional 24 hours to the countdown timer of a match that's about to expire. Although it applies to every gender, it’s useful for men who want to show a genuine interest in connecting with a female profile.

Every user enjoys one free Extend per day. If they want to enjoy more than one Extend each day, this IAP pops up requesting users to subscribe to Bumble Boost.

For this IAP, users get varying options based on their chosen time period. They can go for 1 week, 3 months, or  6 months. The 3-month package comes at a 60% discount, the 1 month gives a 46% discount, while the 6 months offer the best value to users.

7. Backtrack

The IAP is about the ‘Backtrack’ feature on the Bumble app. This allows users to undo an action where they may have swiped left to reject a profile.

With this IAP option, the app prompts users to choose one of these subscription plans and activate the feature.

Users can choose from multiple subscription periods. The 1-week plan is the ‘MOST POPULAR’ while the 6-month plan offers the ‘BEST VALUE’ to users. Besides, with a 1-month plan, users can save 46% and 60% when they get the 3-month plan.

8. Advanced Filters

The ‘Advanced filters’ is an IAP Bumble offers to users to enhance their profile. These include options like height, verified profiles, exercise habits, education level, star sign, dating intentions, political views, religious identity, and preferences regarding smoking,  drinking, and having children. By availing of this offer, they can use as many filters as they want.

Users can modify their filter settings at any time to adapt to changing preferences or to explore different user profiles. This flexibility increases the chance of making the right connections and enhances the attractiveness of the profile.

This IAP directs users to subscribe to any of the Boost Premium plans.

9. Compliments

Bumble’s ‘Compliments’ feature as an IAP lets users send personalized messages to potential matches. Users can directly comment on a part of someone's profile they admire. This is meant to express interest before a mutual match occurs.

New users have 3 free Compliments, after which they will receive this IAP asking to opt for additional purchases within the app.

Bumble offers different packages for purchasing Compliments. It comes in packs of 2, 5, 15, and 30, with larger packages offering a better value per Compliment.

Subscription Model of Bumble

Bumble Premium

Bumble Premium is a subscription service that enhances the Bumble experience, giving users more control and improving their chances of making meaningful matches.

With this subscription, users get unlimited ‘Advanced Filters’, access to the ‘Beeline’ segment, ‘Travel mode’, ‘Backtrack’, time extension on current matches, ‘Rematch’ expired connection, unlimited swipes, and ‘Incognito Mode’. Besides, they enjoy one Spotlight and five ‘SuperSwipes’ each week.

Users can choose the  Premium subscription for 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or lifetime with varying price points.

For those willing to subscribe to the daily Premium plan cannot access SuperSwipe and Spotlight credits.

Bumble Boost

Bumble Boost is another cost-effective subscription model optimized for improved user experience.

With any Bumble Boost plan, users enjoy the ‘Backtrack’ feature, time extension of matches, unlimited swipes, five SuperSwipe/week, and one Spotlight/week.

Users who may not need features like ‘Incognito mode’, ‘Advanced filters’, ‘Beeline’, ‘Travel mode’ and unlimited ‘Best Bee’ likes can choose any of the Bumble Boost subscription plans (1-week, 1-month, 3-months, or 6-month).
